The Day on Your Doorstep campaign is all about encouraging Amber Valley residents to get out and about, explore the countryside, visit local attractions, and shop with local retailers. The heart of Derbyshire has so much to offer, but when was the last time you played tourist in your hometown?

We appreciate that you might be feeling the pinch right now. Staying local over the holidays and enjoying festive festivities where you live is a great way to still do the things you love, without spending a fortune. And the best part? You’re supporting the great local businesses that makeup Amber Valley.

How can I spend a day on my doorstep in Amber Valley?

Looking to add some magic for the kids this Christmas? Got family and friends visiting for the festive season? Wherever you live in Derbyshire, here are some of our top picks for things to see and do over the next month or so...

Codnor’s Christmas Carol Service

Get into the festive spirit with seasonal songs at the Codnor Christmas Carol Service taking place on 19th December with music from the Heage Band and backing from the Codnor Primary School Choir. Refreshments and mince pies are available at the Methodist Church, Mill Lane. Codnor’s Christmas Carol Service is scheduled to run between 7.30 to 8.30pm on 19th December.

Denby Pottery Village Christmas Market

A free-to-enter festive market this December with over 40 stallholders featuring local crafters and makers offering handcrafted gifts and artisan food and drinks. Browse gift ideas and tableware offers in the Factory Shop. Pick up your own real Christmas tree and winter wreath at The Garden Stall.  The Christmas Market is open between 9am and 5pm, 1st to 4th December, and 8th to 10th December.

Elf Trail, Shipley Country Park Visitor Centre

Come along to this Christmas-themed trail and find the clue cards to help you complete the Elf’s activity sheet and receive a certificate! Follow the clues, complete the trail, and then head back to the Visitor Centre to claim your certificate. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear. Dogs are welcome on leads.  The Elf Trail beings at the Visitor Centre which is open 10.30am to 2pm between 18th December 2023 to 8th January 2024.

Santa Special Trains

Take a magical journey this festive season with Midland Railway’s Santa Specials. The excitement begins at Butterly Station as Santa makes his way through the train visiting each child at their seat. Santa’s supporting cast of elves and helpers will have goodies for all. Services run at various times on 8th to 10th December, 15th to 17th December, and 20th to 24th December.
