Directions

Start: Cock Inn car park, Muggington
Please ask permission to park. There is also a small layby nearby.

1. Leave the car park, turn right on Church Lane, then left just after Woodside Cottage. Follow the track towards the woodland.
2. At the gateway, keep right (do not enter the woods). Follow the field edge with the hedge on your left. Turn left over the stile by the second gate.
3. Walk downhill with the wood on your left. At the corner, head to the metal gate on the right. Cross the stile, the field, and a second stile to reach a farm track. Go straight on past Old Covert Farm, then uphill with the hedge on your left. Go through the gate at the top and continue downhill to Park Farm.
4. Turn left at the gate and follow the track past the farm buildings and horse training area.
5. Walk between the two hedgerows. Cross the stile into the field and continue straight with the hedge on your right. Cross two gates, then head diagonally uphill to the gate in the top-left corner.
6. Turn left along the lane. At the end, go through the gate into the field. Continue straight with the hedge on your left to a wicket gate. Then cross the field diagonally with the fence on your left, turn left along the hedge, and go through the metal gate. Turn left onto Taghole Lane.
7. At the bend, take the stile on the right and go uphill to the churchyard. Walk straight through All Saints Churchyard.
   Parts of All Saints Church date back to late Saxon times. The church is fortunate in having three great treasures: the magnificent, almost hollow yew tree in the church yard, which is estimated to date back to Saxon times; the Saxon window in the west of the nave and the altar-tomb in the Kniveton Chapel. The altar tomb contains two splendid brass portraits of Sir Nicholas Kniveton and Joanna, his wife.
8. Turn right onto the road, then left onto Green Lane (towards Weston Underwood).
9. Take the next footpath on the right. Follow the hedge downhill, through woods, and over the bridge at Mercaston Brook. Continue up to the watercourse and turn left towards Trent Trout Farm. Follow the fence on your right.
10. Turn left along the farm edge, cross the bridge, then walk uphill to the wicket gate by the tall trees. Go straight across the next two fields.
11. Cross the stream and go left uphill with the farm on your right. Cross the stile, continue to the top under the phone wires, then down to the stile onto Cutler Lane. Take care: traffic on this road.
12. Turn left and cross the main road to Burland Green Lane.
13. At No. 9 (Pennine Lodge), take the first gate. Through the small woodland and cross the bridge.
14. Cross the stile and go straight up across the field to the next stile.
15. Walk uphill towards the woodland, aiming for the second pylon from the right. Through the gate follow the path between Chilla Carr Quarry.
16. In the first field, take the gap on the right, then turn left. At the corner, take the gate and walk straight through three more fields, using the distant Alport Heights masts as a guide.
    The war memorial marks the crash-landing site of a bomber, which was stationed at Ashbourne aerodrome. For unknown reasons the bomber could not land after its mission. All five members of the crew were killed. Three members were buried on the site; the other two are buried elsewhere in the country. The family of one of the crew later erected the memorial.
17. Halfway down the next field, go through the gate on the left. Follow the hedge to the bottom and turn left onto the track. Follow it for ½ mile back to the road, then bear left to return to the Cock Inn.
