Start: North Street Free Car Park

This walk offers great views of Langley Mill's industrial past, especially its canals and former coal landscapes.

1. Leave the car park and turn left down North Street towards the church. Cross Station Road at the pedestrian lights and turn right, passing the cricket club. Turn left into Aldreds Lane, then left onto Amber Drive.
2. At the end of Amber Drive go under the railway and into Lime Avenue. Turn right onto Brookvale Road, cross Milnhay Road and continue straight down the lane opposite. After 250 metres, at the right hand bend, take the left footpath to reach the Erewash Canal, crossing the bridge over the River Erewash.
   This marks the northern end of the Erewash Canal, once linked to the Nottingham and Cromford Canals at the Great Northern Basin (built 1788–1794). The basin was restored in 1973 after the Cromford Canal fell into disuse in 1908.
3. Without crossing the canal, turn left along the towpath for 500 metres and pass under the A608 into the Great Northern Basin. Turn up the ramp to the pavement beside the main road.
4. Turn right. After 200 metres, turn right into Cromford Road. Cross the road and continue along it, taking the third left into Queen Street.
5. Follow the path along the left side of the recreation ground. Turn right between the basketball court and playground to reach Argyle Street. Turn left, then immediately right down the jitty.
6. Turn left onto Cromford Road and continue to the sharp left bend. Here, go straight on down Plumptre Road. At the end, follow the track beside the railway under the A610 and through the gap, keeping the railway on your left.
7. After 500 metres, cross a stile and turn left over another stile to pass beneath the railway. Continue straight across the field with the hedge on your left towards the red brick house.
   The fields here show how former opencast coal workings were restored to farmland. The coal seams formed around 300 million years ago and once supplied major industries and countless homes.
8. At the road, turn right. After 75 metres, take the track on the left to Park Farm. Walk through the farmyard, keeping left of the building, then head toward the barn. Turn right up the track to the gate. Continue across the next two fields to the top left corners and reach the A610. Cross carefully using the central reservation.
9. Turn left for 25 metres, then go through the hedge gap and over the stile. Head downhill with the hedge on your right. Cross the stile into a plantation and follow the path to the far left corner.
10. Go over the stile and turn left onto the bridleway. Follow it as it narrows to a path, eventually reaching the main road. Turn left along Station Road towards the church, then left into North Street to return to the car park.
