Well Dressing and Glorious Gardens
In Derbyshire you will find the unique local custom of Well
Dressing. An ancient tradition which celebrates the gift of
natural pure water throughout the County.
The wooden frames are filled with clay and then a design is
etched into the surface. A colourful picture is then produced
by using seeds, petals and other natural materials. You will
find there are now several towns and villages carrying out the
tradition each year. If you would like to see how a well
dressing is made or to have a go yourself then look out
for the demonstrations - you may be able
to get involved and learn the skills.
Once the Wells are dressed, then a 'Blessing Ceremony' usually
takes place before the display is left for everyone to admire.

look in the brochure library. Well Dressings
usually take place around the country from May to
September.
