Well Dressing:

This ancient custom is only found in or around the borders of Derbyshire.  Well Dressing is a tradition which celebrates the gift of natural pure water throughout the County.

Wooden frames are filled with clay and then a design is etched into the surface.  A colourful picture is then produced by using seeds, petals and other natural materials.

In Amber Valley there are now several towns and villages carrying out the tradition each year. If you would like to see how a well dressing is made or to have a go yourself please come along to the demonstrations - you will have a chance to see just how much work is involved and learn the skills. Once the Wells are dressed, then a 'Blessing Ceremony' takes place before the display is left for everyone to admire.

For a programme of well dressings in the area contact the Chesterfield Tourist Information on 01246 345777 or use the what's on search below.
